1-_MGL2847_new

Miami, FL – July 14, 2016 – Nina Torres Fine Art gallery unveiled the opening exhibition “After Destruction and Compilation” by Marcos Amaro. Marcos Amaro began in art circuit as a collector, whose collection led to the creation in 2012 of Marcos Amaro Foundation and Humus Produções, a Digital Content Producer. His art has always been at the service of humanitarian causes, working photographic processes from the perspective of inclusive look, with people on the street, through the Institute Brasis. The art of relationships with ethics are one of his statements, therefore, the artist devotes a good part of his time in artistic and social causes. It also created a cultural center in Itu. His works are part of representative collections and circulating in major art fairs and exhibitions around the world.

World Red Eye caught up with the man of the hour, who gave us a closer look into his latest exhibition, “After Destruction and Compilation”.

2-_MGL2629_new

WRE: When did your passion for art begin?

MA: I’ve always liked the arts and to draw since I was young. My parents were very passionate about their works; my mother is a fashion designer and my father was a pilot. They definitely had an influence on me.

WRE: Tell us about the exhibition you are presenting at Nina Torres Gallery?

MA: After Destruction and Compilation has about fifteen objects made from airplane parts, molded with other materials such as textile and paint. It is very conceptual.

3-_MGL2624_new

WRE: How were you able to find/get these airplane scraps?

MA: I found them in an airplane boneyard in Kansas.

WRE: What gives you the idea to mix scraps of metal from airplanes with chandeliers and normal, household items?

MA: I like mixed things. I look for objects that remind me of my past and objets that make me feel something when I look at them.

4-_MGL2712_new 4.3-_MGL2859_new

WRE: Where do you collect these pieces of art? Are all of them purchased, or hidden treasures that you find?

MA: Yes all items are collectable. They are all for sale but at the same time, they are my treasures.

WRE: How has your Brazilian culture influenced your work?

MA: There are a few Brazilian artists and musicians that influence me, as well as the Brazilian nature. My true inspiration comes from the german culture and german artists like Joseph Beuys, as well as german expressionism.

4.5-_MGL2838_new

WRE: How does it feel to go from collector to an actual artist?

MA: My collection helped me with my visual repertory and helped develop my artistic language.

WRE: How have people understood your emotional expression through your work?

MA: Each individual understands in their own way. My intention is to awake feelings from the expectations.

4.7-_MGL2784_new

WRE: When are you at your most creative?

MA: When I am involved with emotions and complex feelings.

WRE: What is a typical day like in the studio for you?

MA: There’s no schedule or routine, it flows. I try to focus on the language and aesthetics of the work. I experiment when I’m in my atelier in Itu, Brazil and also when I am at my atelier here in Miami.

Q&A: Drag Gone Sucia: Gio Profera

Gio Profera

Miami Beach, FL – August 4, 2016 – When Basement Miami at the Miami Beach EDITION opened its doors almost two years ago, it single handedly changed the way Miami party goers got down. An ice skating rink, bowling lanes, arcade games and of course a giant dance floor, this nightlife hotspot offers more than what you would see on a typical night out on the town. With the variety of entertainment also came a major addition, an in-house party animal whose main goal is to help set the tone for an epic night, every night. Whether you’ve joined in on his silly antics or have admired his scandalous, jaw-dropping looks from afar, Giovanni “Gio” Profera has undoubtedly stolen the limelight at Basement Miami.

Born and raised in Hialeah, Gio’s art and perception of Miami runs through his veins. He has even referred to Miami as his biggest inspiration. His achievements include winning Miami New Times’ 2016 Master Mind award and his works have been featured locally and nationally on Best of Miami New Times’ 10 Ten people, ABC News, VICE Magazine, Ricky Martin’s “The Best Thing About Me is You”, and 2011 Borsht Film Festival winner, to name a few. Before enlisting as Basement’s go-to entertainer, party goers may have seen Gio out and about strutting his stuff at various nightlife venues around Miami. He also takes on the role of a bearded chongas, aka “HIALEAHZ FINESTZ”, where Profera portrays the character of Juleisy Inbed along his best friend Josue Garcia aka Karla. Profera says these characters have brought Miami “queer culture”. His main goal has always been to ensure everyone in the room is having the time of their life.

When asking why Gio makes such a perfect fit at Basement Miami, the Miami Beach EDITION’s Director of Culture & Entertainment, Josh Wagner, explained “Gio simply makes everything better and his presence lights up a room. He only spreads joy and makes everyone he comes in contact with smile and laugh out loud.” Gio now calls all the shots on Monday nights during his party, Gio’s Total Split Show. Each split show brings a different challenge, including taking a shot, spinning yourself around before bowling, and dressing up like a grandma. What also makes Gio so unique is that you’ll rarely catch him donning the same look. “I have never seen him wear the same outfit twice in the two years I have known him. His creativity knows no bounds and should never be given restrictions,” exclaims Wagner, “Gio is undoubtedly one of the greatest assets that we have at the Miami Beach EDITION. I am lucky to be able to call him my friend.”

World Red Eye snagged a moment with Gio, who gave us a closer look into what goes into his over-the-top looks and what makes him one of the most sought after entertainers in town.

Gio Profera

WRE: When did you first realize dressing in drag/performing was something you were interested in?

GP: I have always loved to dress up and be in costume, but I didn’t realize it was a calling until my senior year in college. I found out they did cosplay at Sushi Samba and it was love at first cosplay.

WRE: What message, if any, are you trying to portray when in character?

GP: Have fun bitches! Life is too short, and as RuPaul says, “you are born naked and the rest is drag.”

1.7-DSC_03586 1.8-DSC_03599

WRE: How do you come up with all the different characters? Where do you draw the inspiration from?

GP: I am inspired by everything around me: nature, people, art, news, education, and color. I love to be loud and flamboyant.

WRE: You are constantly entertaining at Basement, do they give you free reigns to do what you want?

GP: Basement Miami at The Miami Beach EDITION has always encouraged me to be the best Gio I can be. They give me unlimited creative reigns and an opportunity to test and push both of our artistic limits.

3-DSC_03613 4-DSC_03591

WRE: How long is the process to get ready for an average night out?

GP: The process to get ready for any given night can take anywhere from five minutes to five hours depending on what and/or who I need to be that night.

WRE: What other places can we catch you out and about doing your thing as an entertainer?

GP: I perform all across nation. Miami is home base, you can catch me at Basement Miami on Friday’s, Saturday’s and Monday’s for “Gio’s Total Split Show.”

5-DSC_03602 6-DSC_03587 7-DSC_03584

WRE: What do you like best about your job as an entertainer?

GP: What I like best about my job as an entertainer is the fact that I get to do me 365 days a year. I also feel a sense of nirvana when a fan tells me I bring a smile to their face. There’s nothing more rewarding than making people laugh and forget their worries for a bit.

WRE: How does your drag persona differentiate from your normal self? Are you this outrageous when not in costume?

GP: I am a pretty basic hoe out of costume. I am a caregiver to my 84 year old grandmother and my handicapped uncle; they provide me with a light to inspire others.

WRE: What’s a typical day in the life of Gio?

GP: Wake up, run errands, go to production meetings, come home, nap, get grandmother and uncle ready for bed, beat a face and get into costume, work and repeat it all over again the next day.

WRE: Where do you see yourself in 10 years from now?

GP: I would like to be more behind the scenes and help mentor young, emerging artists. I also would like to produce more films and screen plays.

Q&A: The Making of III Points

Miami, FL – September 30, 2016 – With the highly anticipated III Points quickly approaching, the buzz around town is heating up as major musical acts and artists begin to descend on Miami. III Points Music, Art & Technology Festival, was born in 2013 as a platform to shed light on Miami’s talented local acts, vendors, artists, thinkers, dreamers, doers and idea people. This city’s artist community was thriving but the perception of Miami was stereotypical to South Beach bottles and model culture. David Sinopoli and Erica Freshman created III Points as a home and voice for the “other” Miami. III Points curates a line-up of cutting edge international performances paired with the best of the Miami’s music scene. Over the three days of the festival, III Points takes over the town with lectures, labs, tech talks, music and gallery showcases and a fully immersive 5 stage main ground.

This year is without a doubt one of the biggest yet, bringing renowned acts including LCD Soundsystem, Thievery Corporation, M83, Flight Facilities, to name a few, to a city that doesn’t typically see this variety of genres. You can also expect some jaw-dropping activations including Vaporwave Mall, Love Bus Project: A Roving Activation, Wynwood Farmers Market, Virtual Reality Lounge, Art By God Recharge Lounge and more.

World Red Eye caught up with the III Points masterminds, David Sinopoli and Erica Freshman, who gave us a closer look into how this festival all began, what goes into creating such a unique experience and what we can get excited for during this year’s festival.

WRE: How was III Points first created?

DS: III Points was created from an idea to do a SXSW style festival in October and to really shine light on the other Miami. The one that doesn’t exist in the bubble of that VIP stereotype; that ‘Vegas by the Sea’ stigma we have to outsiders.

WRE: What exactly are the III Points?

EF: Music, Art and Technology.

DS: The festival that acts as a living, breathing installation for three days.

WRE: How did the necessity to create this “other Miami” come about?

DS: The identity of the other Miami was and is made up of all the humans that are pushing to evolve the culture renaissance that we have going on in Miami right now. This is directly around the people who want to re-identify what Miami means to the rest of the world when it comes to music, art, tech and community.

EF: Not sure creating “other Miami” was a necessity but there was all of this amazing shit happening, it was interesting, inspiring and something we wanted to do.

WRE: Are there any festivals around the world that have influenced the feel you want your festival to have?

DS: Not really, we like to think that III Points is truly a site specific, time specific project. Each year a different feel, each year its own, each year a glimpse into what Miami is right now.

EF: I always love FYF Festival and Primavera bookings.

WRE: III Points is well known to have a vastly diverse gathering of acts. In a world of festivals seemingly bound to specific genres, was this you guys being the change you wanted to see?

DS: Yeah definitely. We want to program quality, not genre specific and most importantly, program 60% Miami acts. We want people to truly feel our city when they come to III Points.

EF: It just needs to be artistic and awesome.

WRE: People have been going crazy for some of the announcements you’ve been dropping this year from Flight Facilities to Dixon to the recently reunited LCD Soundsystem. What kind of thought goes into your bookings?

DS: It’s an open canvas every year and we try to work on acts that really correspond to what Miami has been producing or making at the time. Plus, we love to get acts that would otherwise miss playing in our city because of routing or because it didn’t work in their schedule. We take pride in debuting new acts to the city, that otherwise wouldn’t come here.

EF: Insane planning, praying (or something like that) and relationships.

WRE: Technology plays a crucial role in the festival as well. Can you speak briefly on how III Points is pushing future-forward for a more advanced tomorrow?

DS: We are just trying to create a space and atmosphere for people to make their own experience. We do not want to preach or push anything, we just want to create a magical space for people to have their own transcendence.

WRE: What is the most fun part about planning a festival?

DS: Personally, I love the booking process and then correspond the visuals aspects or installations to that sound. But I also love the build, the process the week before where it all comes together. 362 days of the year planning for a 3-day event is super intense but when it comes together, there is no better feeling.

EF: All of it; making something in your head come to life.

WRE: The question everyone must be asking, how did III Points get their hands on a naked Donald Trump Statue to pull off one of the best marketing stunts of the year?

DS: I really don’t want to comment on it. We just are trying to make festivals great again.

WRE: III Points is much more than just a music festival. Last year we were blown away by the geometry detailed throughout the grounds. What kind of art installations are you brewing up this year?

DS: We have a lot of returning artists plus a beautiful partnership with ICA Miami. They have been a huge supporter of us and the local art scene and we are proud to have them as a partner.

EF: Stay tuned. We are working with Bonfida who is creating a large scale interactive installation, FNDR and Fusion VR experience, ICA, Aileen Vaporwave mall, Jason Boogie and more.

WRE: You guys do an amazing job at shining a spotlight on local talents as well, allowing even native Miamians to rediscover the magic of their city. Is that something you feel is integral to III Points as a festival?

DS: One hundred percent. It’s the true reason we are doing what we are doing. They support us all year, they work their ass off putting out beautiful projects and the world needs to wake the fuck up and understand that Miami is. Really, it’s one of the hotbeds for talent right now. We take pride in showcasing that.

WRE: The intimacy of III Points is something you can’t find at many other festivals. How do you guys pull this off so well?

DS: Well, Miami is really a small major market city and we are babies still. The boutique feel lends itself to those pieces of us doing this in Miami. I think our team will always be committed to the experience and sometimes when you grow to large, the experience gets diluted.

EF: Giving a shit and thinking about the 360 experience.

WRE: How have you seen III Points grow throughout the years?

DS: I think the mission has become clearer to us. The growth in numbers, acts or size of acts has come with time but the mission has become more specific and people here in Miami have been so supportive of that intention. That local support has been key for us to be in this position.
